“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” – Psalm 37:4 (NIV)
Today’s Scripture Lesson
At first glance, Psalm 37:4 may seem like a promise that God will give us anything we want, but this verse holds a deeper, richer truth. It teaches us that when we truly delight in the Lord, our hearts become aligned with His desires.
To “delight in the Lord” means to find our joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment in Him. It is about seeking His presence, loving His Word, and placing Him above everything else in our lives. When we do this, something amazing happens—our desires begin to change. Instead of chasing temporary, worldly things, we start longing for what pleases God.
David, the author of this psalm, knew that trusting in God brings lasting joy. The more we spend time with Him in prayer, worship, and the study of His Word, the more our hearts reflect His. As we delight in God, we find peace in His plans, patience in His timing, and contentment in His presence.
God does care about the desires of our hearts, but He is most interested in shaping our hearts to desire what is truly best for us. When we make Him our greatest joy, we can trust that the longings He places in our hearts will lead to His perfect will.
