Drawing Near to God

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you.” – James 4:7-8 (NIV)

Today’s Scripture Lesson

Life is full of spiritual battles. Temptation, distractions, and struggles can pull us away from God, but James 4:7-8 gives us a clear roadmap for victory: submit to God, resist the enemy, and draw near to Him.

Submission to God means surrendering our will, desires, and plans to Him. It’s not about losing freedom but gaining true peace by aligning ourselves with His perfect will. When we submit, we acknowledge that His way is best, even when it challenges us.

Resisting the devil means actively rejecting sin and temptation. The enemy wants to discourage and distract us, but God promises that when we resist him in faith, he must flee. We are not powerless—through Christ, we have authority to stand strong against the enemy’s schemes.

Drawing near to God is an incredible invitation. The closer we get to Him through prayer, worship, and His Word, the more we experience His presence and guidance. And the promise is clear: when we take steps toward God, He takes steps toward us.

This passage reminds us that victory over sin and closeness with God are not complicated formulas. They require simple but intentional steps: surrender, resist, and seek. As we do, God meets us with His strength, protection, and presence.

How to Apply This Scripture Passage to Your Life

  1. Surrender Daily – Begin each day by submitting your plans, thoughts, and actions to God, trusting in His wisdom.
  2. Stand Firm Against Temptation – When faced with sin or doubt, resist with prayer, Scripture, and faith, knowing the enemy must flee.
  3. Pursue God’s Presence – Set aside time each day to pray, read His Word, and worship, drawing nearer to Him.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I submit my heart and life to You. Help me to resist the enemy and stand strong in faith. Draw me closer to You each day, and let me experience Your presence in a deeper way. Thank You for Your promise to come near when I seek You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
