Faith—Confidence in What We Hope For

Faith—Confidence in What We Hope For

Sunday, January 12, 2025

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” – Hebrews 11:1 (NIV)

Today’s Scripture Lesson:

Faith is one of the most foundational aspects of the Christian life. Hebrews 11:1 beautifully defines it as confidence in what we hope for and assurance in what we cannot see. It’s not wishful thinking or blind optimism; it’s trusting that God is who He says He is and that He will fulfill His promises.

Think of faith like planting a seed. When you bury it in the soil, you don’t see it grow immediately, but you trust the process. You water it, give it sunlight, and wait expectantly for it to sprout. Faith operates the same way. We trust God’s promises even when we can’t yet see the results.

The heroes of faith listed in Hebrews 11—Abraham, Noah, Moses, and others—lived with this kind of trust. Abraham left his homeland, believing God would guide him. Noah built an ark before seeing rain. They acted in faith, trusting God’s word even when their circumstances didn’t make sense.

This verse challenges us to live with that same bold confidence. Faith means stepping out even when the path ahead isn’t fully clear. It means trusting that God is working behind the scenes, even when we don’t see immediate evidence. And it means believing that what He has promised—eternal life, provision, healing, and hope—will surely come to pass.

How to Apply This Scripture Passage to Your Life:

  1. Step Out in Faith: Take a step of obedience in an area where God is calling you to trust Him, even if you can’t see the full picture yet.
  2. Remember God’s Promises: Write down Bible promises that resonate with your situation and meditate on them daily.
  3. Celebrate Small Victories: Recognize and thank God for every step of progress, even when the final outcome is still unseen.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of faith that allows me to trust in Your promises. Help me to walk by faith, not by sight, and to place my confidence in Your unfailing word. Strengthen my heart when doubt arises and remind me that You are always working, even when I cannot see it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
