“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
Today’s Scripture Lesson
Depression can feel like a deep fog that clouds every thought, every emotion, every hope. Whether it’s circumstantial or seemingly without cause, the weight is real and often invisible to others. The psalmist David knew this pain well. Throughout the Psalms, he pours out his sorrow, fear, and desperation—but he also clings to the truth of God’s nearness.
Psalm 34:18 offers a profound promise: God is close to the brokenhearted. He’s not waiting for you to get over your sadness or pick yourself back up. He moves toward you in your brokenness. The Hebrew word used for “close” implies more than physical nearness; it speaks of God’s intimate, personal presence. He draws near not just to watch, but to save those crushed in spirit.
There’s no shame in feeling low. Even Jesus, in the Garden of Gethsemane, was “overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death” (Matthew 26:38). He understands. And because He understands, He offers more than sympathy—He offers rescue. That doesn’t always mean instant deliverance, but it does mean you are not alone, not abandoned, and never without hope.
God’s comfort often comes through Scripture, through worship, through the gentle support of others, and through the quiet whisper of the Holy Spirit reminding you that you are seen, known, and loved.

Prayer
Father, I thank You that You are close when I feel far away from everything and everyone. When I am crushed in spirit, You do not turn away. Instead, You draw near. Comfort me in my heaviness, and remind me that even in my darkest days, Your light is not far off. In Jesus’ name, amen.
